Fear of Flying one of the commonest fears

Fear of flying may be a distinct phobia in itself, or it may be an indirect combination of one or more other phobias related to flying, such as claustrophobia (a fear of enclosed spaces) or acrophobia (a fear of heights). It may have other causes as well, such as agoraphobia (especially the type that has to do with having a panic attack in a place they can't escape from). It is a symptom rather than a disease, and different causes may bring it about in different individuals.
The fear receives more attention than most other phobias because air travel is often difficult for people to avoid—especially in professional contexts—and because the fear is widespread, affecting a significant minority of the population. A fear of flying may prevent a person from going on vacations or visiting family and friends, and it can cripple the career of a businessperson by preventing them from traveling on work-related business.

Symptoms

A fear of flying is a level of anxiety so great that it prevents a person from travelling by air, or causes great distress to a person when he or she is compelled to travel by air. The most extreme manifestations can include panic attacks or vomiting at the mere sight or mention of an aircraft or air travel.

Causes

The fear of flying may be created by various other phobias and fears:
  • fear of crashing which is often and inaccurately believed to most likely result in death, which is the most common reason for the fear of flying.
  • a fear of closed in spaces (claustrophobia), such as that of an aircraft cabin
  • a fear of heights (acrophobia)
  • a feeling of not being in control
  • fear of vomiting, where a person will be afraid that they'll have motion sickness on board, or encounter someone having motion sickness and have no control over it (such as escaping it)
  • fear of having panic attacks in certain places, where escape would be difficult and/or embarrassing (agoraphobia)
  • fear of hijacking or terrorism
  • fear of turbulence
  • fear of flying over water or night flying
A previous traumatizing experience with air travel or somehow connected to flying can also trigger a fear of flying. For example, the experience of flying to a meeting only to be told that one has been fired might be traumatic enough to subsequently create an association between any air travel and bad or unpleasant events.
Some suggest that the media are a major factor behind fear of flying, and claim that the media sensationalize airline crashes (and the high casualty rate per incident), in comparison to the perceived scant attention given to the massive number of isolated automobile crashes. As the total number of flights in the world rises, the absolute number of crashes rises as well, even though the overall safety of air travel continues to improve. Statistics on various forms of travel show that airplanes are safer than other common forms of transport per kilometer traveled. If only the crashes are reported by the media (with no reference to the number of flights that do not end in a crash), the overall (and incorrect) impression created may be that air travel is becoming increasingly dangerous, which is untrue. In a way, the media coverage is forcing confirmation bias on viewers.
Misunderstandings of the principles of aviation can fuel an unjustified fear of flying. For example, many people incorrectly believe that the engines of a jet airliner support it in the air, and from this false premise they also incorrectly reason that a failure of the engines will cause the aircraft to plummet to earth. In reality, all fixed-wing aircraft glide naturally, and the engines serve only to maintain altitude during the flight. A big cause of fear of flying is that it is difficult to imagine how planes stay in the air, thus a person's understanding of the science behind flying can affect the person's fear about flying.

There are pharmacological and non pharmacological treatments  for  fear of flying ..consult your psychiatrist  and
start the treatment..

These shadows of mine

Deep breath.

This is hard.

I’m sitting here in bed staving off huge panic and it’s just me and a blank screen. There’s no one here. I’m not using my voice, and maybe that’s part of the problem, but I can still hear myself throughout my body screaming at me to stop. To shut up. To forget it and carry on.

But it’s about time I said some things because I cannot keep doing this again and again. I cannot keep feeling like this again and again. I cannot keep my mouth shut in fear again and again.

I feel a hypocrite. My career is based on giving young people empowerment and a strong, brave voice, to stand up for themselves and encourage them to realise they deserve the best. And while I can speak explicitly about my mental health, I’ve never been able to talk about my experiences of abuse. How does that work? One directly links the other.

Another deep breath.

I won’t detail the abuse here. If that’s what you’re looking for, you can leave now. I won’t judge you. Because I get it, I really do. The abuser this is about (because no, there’s not just one) is relatively well known and the rumour mill churns and turns. People love it, right? The gossip. The speculation. The entitlement of opinion and knowing.

My abuse is gossip. It’s so very public. People seem to know more about it than I do.

Do they? Do I have it all wrong? Am I lying? Did I dream it? Am I a bad person? Am I in my area of work to try and make up for it? Am I a fraud?

These strangers seem to understand what happened and I, exposed on the front line, do not understand what happened all those years ago. Not a little, not at all.

I’ve very rarely spoken publicly about this. I’ve never wanted to.

Is that ok? Is that allowed? Or am I weak?

But the guilt whenever something new comes up, when my timelines are flooded with talk about this person, and I don’t say anything, I don’t stand up for myself or the others involved, eats away at me. The denial and protection I’ve smothered my memories in is beaten and eroded, and one day it’s going to be fully exposed once again and destroy me.

At least, that’s what it feels like.

This person emailed me about a month ago now. This is really what I want to talk about. This is where I will defend myself and try to be strong.

Deeper breath.

Out of the blue, an email in many paragraphs saying one thing: sorry. Nothing more, nothing less.

When I saw his name, my body dissolved. I was with my boyfriend and two friends. My boyfriend read the email first. There was little reaction. Boredom, if anything. The email was pointless. I read it and felt the same.

I read it again, and once more, and did not feel the same. Because no matter how fragile I feel, how fearful I am, how tightly I wrap myself in cotton wool when it comes to the abuse, I suddenly found strength. I found power and tools to rip that fucking email apart.

The email began with an apology for emailing in the first place, and a wish to cause no more upset.

But, obviously, he had to email anyway. Abusers have to put your feelings, your whole being, aside and assert their power in any given situation.

I’ll make this clear. If you have even an inkling that you may cause some upset to a person by getting in touch, especially a victim of your abuse, whether you believe you abused them or not, you do not fucking email them. You leave them be. You do not decide to step back into their life and remind them of your being. You do not put your wants first. That behaviour is not growth. It is not a kindness.

I won’t dissect the rest of the email here because there’s no point. It really was a boring mess with no substance. There was nothing for me in it, this email was all for him.

I blocked this person, finally - some evidence of strength, a while ago on every social media platform, by phone, and by email. He would have known this. That is, correct me if I’m wrong, strong evidence that a person does not want to know of your existence and vice versa, let alone contact.

Nevertheless, he found a new email address for me. He found a way through. Well done, him. Congratulations. How jubilant he must have felt knowing he could get a wet apology through to me to make himself feel better.

Yes, my body went into panicked shock when that email came through but I managed to tear it apart, be angry instead of scared, and block him once again pretty damn fucking quickly.

Deep breath, and hold.

But why, then, am I still upset, exhausted, and feeling unable to join in on the conversations with other victims, other witnesses, defending our stories and whole beings? Why do I feel tiny? Why do I feel like a fraud? Why am I punishing myself? Why can’t I take control? Why can’t I be strong? Why do I let strangers on the internet take control of my story to fit their gossip?

Why do I think it would be better if I snuck away, never to be seen again? Why do I think it would be easier if I just… left.

Why am I exhausted with anger towards myself and the rumour mill instead of him.

It’s an odd feeling, feeling totally alone and defenceless when your story - your story - is so public and popular.

I’ve stayed silent for so long on this subject that I feel I’ve given up all rights to my experience. It’s so tainted now, so grubby with so many hands all over it. Never once have I taken it back to clean it up.

Like it could ever be cleaned up.

I won’t ever receive public support, an outpouring of love, defence, and kindness, because I’ve stayed in the shadows for far too long. I will always just be the girl who her best friend’s boyfriend cheated with. Nameless, faceless. And for some reason, to me, that sounds far worse than the girl who was sexually and emotionally abused by a powerful, public figure.

What a horrible, disgusting reality that is.

I am strong. I am brave, I am courageous. But I am vulnerable. This is my Achilles’ heel.

And exhale.

The sweetness of anticipation the sourness of anxiety two sides of the same coin

According to a recent study described in a post on the Anxiety Insights blog, the production of pleasure and dread are closely related processes in the brain. The same chemical, dopamine, works in closely proximate regions to produce these seemingly antithetical emotional responses:
Kent Berridge, PhD, and his colleagues at the University of Michigan, identified dopamine's dual effect on the nucleus accumbens, a brain region that motivates people and animals to seek out pleasurable rewards like food, sex, or drugs, but is also involved in fear. They found that inhibiting dopamine's normal function prevented the nucleus accumbens neurons from inducing both rewarding and fearful behaviors, suggesting that dopamine is important in both.

In previous research, Berridge and colleagues showed that a distance of only a few millimeters separated desire and dread functions in the nucleus accumbens (which is only about 5 millimeters long in humans).

I don't pretend to understand brain functioning, but abstractly it doesn't surprise me that pleasure and anxiety are neurologically linked. There's a lot of overlap in what these sensations are like in the body and mind. Physiologically, both involve a state of heightened alertness; psychologically, both are more intense than and therefore distinct from the humdrum of the everyday.

Think of what it's like to perform in front of others, whether it's in a school play or in a business meeting: For some, it's the very definition of pleasure, while for others it's excruciating, the last thing in the world they want to do. In either case, though, there are the sweaty palms and the racing heart and the concomitant narrowing of focus to the situation at hand.

This makes me think about the cognitive aspect of panic, the way we choose whether a given scenario we face brings us pleasure or mental pain. In the case of performing in front of others, some people experience excitement, and others experience anxiety. What distinguishes them? The cognitive psychologist would say it's all about our interpretation of we're experiencing. If you tell yourself your sweaty palms and racing heart are a sign of excitement, excitement is what you'll feel; if you tell yourself your sweaty palms and racing heart mean something dreadful is about to occur, on the other hand, you'll experience anxiety. Change the interpretation, and you change the experience.

This concept plays a big role in both cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and Buddhist meditation. In both cases, you're taught to reconsider the stories you tell yourself about your experience -- to see that the stories you consider unequivocal reality are merely your interpretation of your experience. You end up considering other, less catastrophic stories about your experience. In other words, when your heart races and your palms sweat, you learn to tell yourself, "It doesn't mean I'm having a heart attack/going crazy/[insert extreme, neurotic response here]. It just means I'm experiencing a particular cluster of physiological responses to which the genetic roulette wheel has inconveniently deemed I'll be predisposed, responses that in no way imply I'm facing any real danger."

Bit of red paper on your shirt

I won't lie, I'm a tad worried about this post I'm about to write. It's serious, controversial and could well be personal for some people. But I had a chat with my dad and we both agreed that I should do it, for a lot of people's sakes, but especially for Jon Snow's.

What's the first thing you think of when you think of Remembrance Day? Poppies? Yeah, me too. Why? Because that's the flower that grew after World War I? Maybe. More likely though because everyone (on TV) wears a poppy around this time. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you shouldn't wear a poppy, but why have people suddenly thought it necessary to wear one? Why has Jon Snow been branded with a disrespectful title because he's not?

For the past week people have been offering poppies in the common room in exchange for a donation. I thought of getting one but whilst rummaging around in my bag for a spare 20p (er, hello, there were aeros in the venders and you know how I like my aeros) I pondered about why I exactly wanted one. My conclusion: Flowers look pretty, it will make me feel good, everyone else is wearing one. Not for the real reason, to remember those who bravely fought and risked their lives for us in war. I have a poppy on my Twitter avatar but I wouldn't have if I hadn't seen others 'wearing' it. For remembering, of course, but it looks nice too. Poppies should be personal, not a trend.

I've even seen people blinging up their poppies with sequins to make them glam.... Oh right, no complaints about that then? *facepalm* SURELY THAT'S WORSE THAN NOT WEARING ONE?!

Jon Snow won't wear a poppy until Remembrance Day and I don't have a problem with that. I squinted my eyes a smidge and got a bit fidgety when I found out but only because of the backlash that I knew it would cause. But I can guarantee to everyone who thinks he's a 'bad man' that he is one of the loveliest men I have ever met and, although yes he does stand his ground which could been seen as stubborn, would never ever want to hurt anyone's feelings. And I totally understand why he's done it! Every single person you see on TV at the moment is wearing a poppy, but there's no way in hell that it's on their own accord. No way. It's fixed on them just before they go on air so their image isn't put down. They're not necessarily wearing it to remember the brave, and to be honest in some cases they won't even know what the poppies are for. They're following the herd. "Don't be a sheep Louise, just cos your friends have iPhones doesn't mean you need one."

Jon is in no way disrespectful. He's speaking out and saying that he shouldn't have to wear a poppy just because people tell him to. He will wear a poppy on Remembrance Day and pay his respects in his own way. Good on him! "But he's setting a bad example." No he's not. For a start, his concluding film The Art Of War from Channel 4's The Genius of British Art series was shown last night. A film which he is deeply proud of.

Stripping the meaning away from the poppy, you're really wearing some red paper on you with some green plastic and if I was going to be really pernickety I could say that you're wasting trees. You don't need a poppy to remember. Grow your own poppies if you want one and just make the donation.

Lastly, there are some people who don't just remember the ones we've lost in war on one particular day or period of days. They remember all year round. They remember in their dreams. They don't have to remember because they are reminded every day that there's an empty place at the dinner table where a father, brother or son should be. They don't wear poppies all the time. Would you dare say that they are being impertinent?

Disrespectful? Why did you really 'buy' your poppy?

A New Kind of Twin Study and the Heritability Fraud

In my post on Psychology Today, "Scientific Fraud in the Nature versus Nurture Debate," I discussed the disturbing tendency of psychiatric researchers to use the term heritability as a synonym for genetic, which it certainly is not. The heritability statistic is a measure of phenotype, not genotype, meaning it is a measure of the final outcome of the influence of the interactions between genes and the environment on such things as certain personality characteristics or psychiatric symptoms.

The statistic is derived from twin studies in which fraternal and identical twins who were raised together are compared to each other and to those raised apart on various traits. It is not a measure of purely genetic influences but instead a measure of a mix of purely genetic influences plus gene-environment interactional influences.

There is no way to tell how much of each is present in the statistic. The determination of heritability can also be manipulated in a number of ways, such as by setting the bar for saying that a symptom is present or absent at different levels.

Interestingly, a recent study employing a very different type of twin study has been getting a fair amount of press (Thalia C. Eley, Tom A. McAdams, Fruhling V. Rijsdijk, et. al., "The Intergenerational Transmission of Anxiety: A Children-of-Twins Study," American Journal of Psychiatry, 172 [7], pp. 630-637, 2015).

Rather than comparing twins with each other, the authors compared the children of twins with one another. The subjects were anxiety and a dimension of normal personality known as neuroticism - a measure of emotional reactivity. People with higher neuroticism scores tend to get more anxious and/or depressed in reaction to negative environmental stimuli, and remain dysregulated longer, than those with lower scores.

By comparing the extent to which correlations between children and their twin uncle/aunt (avuncular correlations) differ for monozygotic (identical) and dizygotic (fraternal) twin families, the authors were able to infer the extent to which genetic and environmental factors influence transmission from one generation to another. Children share a greater level of genetic influence with their uncle/aunt when in monozygotic families than when in dizygotic families.

Thus, if children resemble their uncle/aunt to a greater extent in monozygotic families than in dizygotic families, this implies a genetic influence on transmission of the trait of interest. In contrast, if these two sets of correlations are similar, and are significantly lower than the parent-child correlations, this is indicative of an environmental mode of transmission.

The results of the new study showed almost the opposite of the usual results of heritability studies on neuroticism: environmental factors came out very much more important than genetic ones! Living with one's parents was found to be far more influential than merely inheriting 50% of their genes.

It appeared that children and adolescents learned anxious behavior from their parents rather than inheriting a tendency towards it from their parents genetically.

Now, I must say that the authors used a statistical technique to come to their conclusion called "structural equation modeling"—of which I know absolutely nothing. So I am not able to say if the methodological techniques used in traditional twin studies yield more accurate results than those found in this type of study. This may, in fact, be a case of scientists being able to get the results they want to get through statistical manipulation of their study data.

And surely neuroticism must have some significant genetic component. Clearly, some people are naturally more high strung than others.

Nonetheless, I do know from the observation of blatantly obvious behavioral patterns within families and other social groups that anxiety can be highly contagious. Since as of now mental health professionals can't fix your genes but we can fix your relationships, I know on which factors therapists should focus the majority of their attention.

Manage Stress and Avoid Anxiety Part III Psychological methods of stress management

The principles of cognitive therapy suggest that negative thoughts popping up in the mind on various occasions are significant in the development or exacerbation of depression, anxiety, anger, low self-esteem, self-defeating behaviours and difficulties in stressful situations. Therefore one has to identify and challenge these negative thoughts which are automatically generated into the consciousness in order to enable a person to reduce distress and enhance the ability to cope with stressful situations. The psychological techniques of stress management can be summarized as follows:
Learn specific strategies to think more realistically and positively about life.
Avoid negative thinking and cognitive distortions.
These techniques are collectively referred to as cognitive restructuring procedures.
COMMON COGNITIVE DISTORTIONS
1. BLACK AND WHITE THINKING (ALL OR NONE THINKING)
Some people see everything in terms of ‘all good’ or ‘all bad’ with no middle ground. One may self suggest that being in a relationship with somebody or in an association with some movement must be all good, otherwise it is a terrible and unfulfilled relationship or association.
2. CATASTROPHISING (EMOTIONAL THINKING)
Some people exaggerate their mistakes or problems by blowing them up out of proportion. For example, suppose your boss asked you to do something again. If you think that it is ‘the worst thing that could have happened’ it is emotional thinking. Catastrophising or emotional thinking always causes tension and anxiety.
3. MIND READING
This is reading more into the behaviours and expressions of others than is really there. For example, if your boss calls you into his office to speak to you. While coming out from the room you think: ‘He looked at me strangely. He is angry with me.’ Not even experienced psychiatrists and psychologists have the power of mind reading. Mind reading is a negative automatic thinking.
4. FORTUNE TELLING (SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY)
Some people are in the habit of imagining the worst will occur in events and assuming all life events will turn out badly. Example: Not wanting to attend a party one thinks:”I know I’ll have a bad time and no one will speak to me.” Using this cognitive distortion can lead you to actually making a negative scenario a reality (At the party he feels uncomfortable and avoids contact with people). This is often referred to as ‘self fulfilling prophecy’.
5. LABELING
You attach a negative label to yourself or others instead of describing the actual behaviours or actions. Example: calling one a hopeless loser rather than just acknowledging that one had made a mistake.
6. OVER GENERALISATION
This is drawing a general conclusion on the basis of only one incident. One bus conductor misbehaved to a passenger. The passenger draws a general conclusion that all bus conductors are bad and misbehaving.
7. MENTAL FILTER
Some are in the habit of taking into consideration negative things and incidents only. A clerk in a bank was working very well and was happy. At the fag end of the working hours a customer expressed some anger for the delay. The clerk forgets all good tidings of the day and broods over the angry response of a customer.
8. DISQUALIFYING THE POSITIVE
A girl’s friend said: “You look good in the photograph.” The girl’s response was: “Oh! It is only because photographer touched the negative.”
9. JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS
The person has not arrived in the exact appointed time. One jumps to conclusion: “He will not come today.”
10. MAGNIFICATION AND MINIMISATION
Overestimation and underestimation of one’s own potentialities are self defeating negative thinking.
11. PERSONALISATION
Owns others lapses and faults. The student failed in the examination owing to lack of preparation. The father of the student tells himself: “My son failed because of my lack of attention and proper parenting.”
